Exit interview

Exit interviews are conducted when you leave a company. The purpose of them is to gather information about why employees are leaving. Be careful not to go too far in any criticisms of the company. This could endear any favorable reference.

Remember that it only natural that an employer would wish to know the reasons for an employee leaving. Training new staff and losing the benefit of experienced staff can be a big blow to companies and have financial implications aswell.

High staff turnover can cause major problems especially for small companies.

If you do wish to make criticisms make it as constructive as possible and try and be non- personal about any particular person.

Here are some possible question you may be asked.

1. What were the main reasons for leaving the company?
2. Did you think the company made good employers?
3. What was the biggest reason for you leaving?
4. Did you feel you were given adequate support in your role?
5. Did you feel valued at this company?
6. Did you feel you were given sufficient training to carry out your job in a efficient manner?

Many companies simply hand out a questionaire where you can fill in the answers to the questions asked. These can be anonymous or carried out electronically and are less formal than a face to face interview.

Exit interviews are all about being honest - don't be scared of them. They are there to help current and future employees with the company and are also a useful tool in the recruitment process.
