How to dress for an interview

Why is it important to dress correctly for an interview? It is important as despite what anyone says to the contrary...first impresssions count!

Dress sense does make a difference at interviews no matter what job you are employing for. A well presented person who takes pride and care in their appearance means to an employer a person who will take pride and care in their work.

Dress smart – some employers in some industries may not bother too much but why take the risk? You should always dress as neat and tidy as possible and then depending on what type of job you are going for then you can add various finishing touches. For going for a job with a blue chip company or any formal job then the more conservative the better. For jobs in the media or outwith the norm then a degree of personality is usually required.

Tips for men.

  1. Wear a nice dark coloured conservative suit. Make sure it does not get easily wrinkled.
  2. Don’t wear your micky mouse tie! Again wear either a plain stripe or self coloured tie. The less colourful the better.
  3. Wear shoes that fit in with your suit. No trainers please! Make sure they are clean and polished. Try and ensure that you do not get them dirty on the way to the interview!
  4. Try and wear not too much aftershave or cologne.
  5. Ensure your hair is smartly cut and combed.

Tips for women.

  1. Dont wear you best clubbing outfit!
  2. Dont wear too short a skirt. Knee length or below is usually the required length.
  3. Go for a conservative suit colour. Blue, grey and black are usually the best options. Again make sure this is not easily wrinkled.
  4. Dont use too much make-up or perfume. This will leave the wrong impression if you do.
  5. No stilettos or chunky platforms.
  6. Remember to wear underwear that matches your top half. No black bras with white blouses.
  7. Make sure your jewelry is as unobtrusive as possible. No hoop or long dangly earrings. Rings should be confined to either a wedding or engagement ring.
  8. Make sure your tights have no runs or holes in them.
  9. Make sure your hair is clean, neat and tidy.

For both sexes.

Make sure your own personal hygeine is that you are well groomed. Have a bath or shower that day and ensure you do not have any body odour.

Remember first impressions count!
