Effective Interview Techniques

One cannot stress the importance of a job interview. It is the halfway point to your dream job and the perks that come with it. There are many techniques available to approach the interview process. This will assure you of at least a good fighting chance of getting the job.

1. Make it about you and the company.


Some candidates can be very arrogant and just talk about themselves on and on, but this is not a bad thing to imbibe actually. Interviews after all are designed for the prospective employer to get to know you. But try to talk about yourself, your strengths and skills that could prove an asset to the company. State how you can complement the company and why you are the person they are looking for.

2. Highlight the good.

Interviews are for impressing so try to steer clear of topics that can reveal your weaknesses. Some interviewers commonly ask candidates outright what their weaknesses are and one good interview technique is to make your weakness sound like a strength. You may say that your weakness is being a perfectionist and that you want things done to your high standards. You can say that you work too hard and hardly have time for a social life. Instead of being a bad thing, this can be music to an employer’s ears.

3. Be what the company needs.

To support this interview technique, you must first research on the company, what they need and expect in employees. If they like employees who have initiative, who can work with little supervision or is conscientious, pattern your answers along these lines. Relate your characteristics and skills to these qualities that they need.

4. Highlight your previous work experience.

Employers value candidates who have extensive work experience. Tell them about your previous work and how it helped you be adept at certain things, like supervision, time management, group dynamics, etc. This technique is usually used by candidates who are applying for supervisory or other higher positions.
