How to Ace a Phone Interview

Phone interviews are practical and a common practice for most companies as a sort of pre-screening method. A job applicant, upon sending out his resume, must always be prepared for a possible phone interview.

The best way to prepare is by placing your phone in a quiet room (or at least taking the call in a quiet room). This will clear you of distractions and you can hear the interviewer over the phone. Always have your resume nearby and a notepad and pen ready for any information the interviewer may give you.

It’s best that you either stand up or sit up straight. This will make you more confident and will make your voice clearer over the phone. During the interview, make sure you are not chewing gum or puffing on a cigarette. Remember, this may only be a phone interview but it will determine whether you get a second face-to-face interview and possibly a shot at the job.

Having a job phone interview at home, where the noise can be controlled is easy but getting a call when you’re in the grocery shopping or in the mall while watching a movie is difficult. The first reaction of most people is usually to panic and they tend to garble over the phone giving out endless apologies.

The best way to handle this is first, when you see a number on your cell phone that you don’t recognize, immediately assume it is a potential employer. Quickly get to the restroom or a place with less people and answer it as professionally as you can. If you have to apologize for the noise, don’t do it profusely so as not to lose time on more important questions that the interviewer may ask you.

Never ask them to call back at a more convenient time for you because this is a bad sign for the interviewer and may not do so. Try to get by the phone interview as best and as calmly as you can.
